Tips for Car Drivers and Motorcyclists
Rules of the Road and Traffic Signs:
These are the same as in
Germany and Switzerland. For wintry conditions, winter (snow) tyres,
tyres with studs or even snow chains are necessary. Snow chains can be
rented from ÖAMTC and ARBÖ at approx. 100 locations.
Seat belts:
The wearing of seat belts in cars is compulsory.
Crash helmets:
The wearing of crash helmets for motorcycling is compulsory.
Speed limits for passenger cars:
Highway 100 km/h
Motorway 130 km/h
Built-up area 50 km/h
Major roads 50 km/h

the city of Graz: general speed limit 30 km/h, on major roads 50
km/h)For trailers up to 750 kg: motorways and highways 100 km/h
Alcohol limits:
0.5 parts per thousand; penalty EUR 581,- to EUR 3.633,- and loss of driving licence.
Children:
Children under 12 must use child seats.
Car Parking:
In limited parking zones (duration between 30
minutes and 3 hours), parking discs or pay-and-display tickets must be
shown. They are available from banks, tobacconists and filling stations.
Traffic Accidents:
Traffic accidents in which people are
injured must be reported to the police without delay. Where damage is
limited to vehicles, the police need to be informed only if the
identity of the other party is not known.
Petrol/Gasoline: Unleaded (91 Octane), Euro-Super (unleaded, 95 Octane), Super Plus (98 Octane), Lead Replacement Petrol (LRP) for older vehicles, diesel and LPG are all available.
